SOUTH CHINA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY (SCUT) is one of the top 25 research-intensive
leading universities in
China,
a major contributor to the knowledge and economy development of
South China
and nationally recognized for the excellence of its teaching, which
is operated under the direct leadership of the State Ministry of
Education in
China.
SCUT has two campuses, which are situated in Tianhe District and the
University Town of Panyu respectively.
Since its establishment in 1952, SCUT has
developed into a major university that offers comprehensive
disciplines including Science, Engineering, Business, Management,
Liberal Arts, Law and Bio-Medical Science. SCUT is made up of 29
schools, offering 67 bachelor's programs, 3 undergraduate programs
with English-medium, 75 doctoral programs, 177 master's programs,
including 5 specialized master's programs, namely, master's programs
of architecture, master's programs of business administration (MBA,
EMBA), master's programs of public administration (MPA), and 11
stations for post-doctoral research.
SCUT has a favorable condition for education
and a fine environment for teaching. There are 1 national teaching
base of engineering mathematic course, 1 national cultural diathesis
education base for university students, 10 fundamental teaching
experiment centers, and a batch of modern experimental centers have
been established. The library, with a total area of 45,000 square
meters, has a collection of 2,000,000 volumes. The library, which is
steadily being developed into a digital library, offers important
national databases, such as Ei Village, PQDD, etc. On both campuses,
there are sufficient recreation facilities; including international
standard sports ground, gymnasium, student entertainment and sports
center as well as plastic tennis court.
SCUT has a batch of scientific research
organizations and technology development bases with advanced
standards. There are 1 national key laboratory, 2 national
engineering research centers, 4 key laboratories designated by the
State Ministry of Education, 1 national first-grade architecture
design and research institute, 1 national science park, 1 national
teaching base of engineering mathematic course, 1 national cultural
diathesis education base for university students and 6 key
laboratories designed by Guangdong province. Besides, there are more
than 10 engineering research and development centers designated by
Guangdong
province,
Guangzhou
city and SCUT.
SCUT has a faculty of over 4,406 and has
60,898 students at undergraduate, postgraduate and other levels,
which have formed a complete talent cultivation system of bachelor
degree, master degree and doctor degree. Over the past 54 years, the
university has cultivated over 140,000 talented graduates, so as to
be named as “Cradle of Engineers” and “Cradle of Entrepreneurs”.
Aiming for an international well-known university, SCUT has been very
active in international academic exchange, promoting collaborations
with more than 50 overseas universities. The 400 international
students enrolled in 2006 come from more than 50 countries, the
majority of which are taking degree studies, while the other are

Tuition: USD 5,980 / person /
academic year, including textbook fee and accommodation fee
(two
beds room).
There are public kitchen, laundry and common rooms in the
residential hall. Rooms of different types are offered, all of which
are equipped with bathroom, internet access, telephone and
air-condition, etc. Students may choose to live off campus, but have
to register in local police station.

Pay Schedule
After submit the application sheet, pay USD3,000.00 of tuition fee.
Within 45 days after term starts, pay the rest of tuition fee. The

Conferment of
Certificate
Student who completes the required courses
and passes all the examinations and defense of his/her thesis can
receive
a) Graduate Diploma in Teaching Chinese as
a Foreign Language
by SCUT
b) Master of Arts in Teaching Mandarin
by St Clements University.
Statement
St. Clements University shall take full
responsibility of the conferment of the Master’s degree and relevant
legal responsibilities. South China University of Technology shall
not take responsibility on this issue

The course focuses on literature, knowledge
and creativity. Topics for language training are rich in context,
such as student trip, impression on
China,
etc. Learners may improve their language proficiency by conducting
various forms of language training. Activities include giving a
speech of 10-15 minutes with the theme set by teachers or
self-decided, vocabulary game, slang game, etc. By taking the
course, learners may be able to speak and express themselves
confidently in Mandarin; understand and be understood by Chinese
counterparts and acquire daily and modern Chinese terms.
Audio-Visual Chinese
Textbook: Speedy Chinese Learning:
Intermediate / Advance Speaking & Listening.
The book is appropriate for short-term
foreign students at the intermediate to advanced level. Each chapter
of the book consists of a text, a list of vocabulary, words and
phrases, a section on functioning in a particular situation,
speaking exercises and listening exercises. The texts teach
appropriate usage of the language while taking into account
practicality and student interest. Communication is taught in both
dialogue and narrative form. The book is edited according to the
Chinese Language Vocabulary and Character Standard and the Chinese
Language Function Standard. Over 90% of the vocabulary in the
book belongs to B level, while a small percentage comes from C level
and the upper level. By taking this course, students will improve
the listening and speaking abilities by grasping the skills and
methods in Chinese expression.

This course serves as a further study of
modern (Mandarin) Chinese phonology. The course covers a) general
aspects of synchronic Chinese phonetics/phonology, including both
segmental and prosodic phonology.
Readings
and class discussions will be supplemented by acoustic analyses of
speech sounds, including comparisons with other Chinese dialects. b)
some issues in Chinese phonetics and phonology from a cognitive
and/or functional approach. The course aims to provide students with
some cognitive, functional, and theoretical perspectives for further
linguistic research.

The Chinese character is an ideographic
writing system, in which the graphic structure is directly related
to the meaning. Hence the first step toward mastery of Chinese
characters is to learn the characteristics of their composition. In
order to broaden learners’ understanding on Chinese characters, the
course will put emphasis on a) the composition theories and b) the
error analysis of Chinese characters, which aim at enabling learners
to reach a more advanced level on teaching Chinese characters.

The course sets the proper perspective
towards the use of learner corpora in analyzing language errors in
order to better understand the process and sequence of acquisition
of Chinese as a second/foreign language. Resonance theory will be
input for introducing the error analysis process, including the
collection, recognition, correction, explanation, causes of errors,
etc.
Teaching Practice
All learners are allocated into groups by
teachers to conduct teaching practice. Course design shall be
accordant with the needs of non-native Chinese speaking students.
Learners shall design courses and conduct teaching in class.
Contents for the teaching practice include Comprehensive Reading,
Listening, Speaking and
Reading,
etc. Experienced teacher will comment on the teaching practice.
Learners will improve their teaching abilities and skills in a rapid
manner by a series of practice.
Preparation on HSK
HSK, abbreviation form for "hàn
yǔ
shuǐ
píng
kǎo
shì",
is the only authorized mandarin proficiency test. Experienced
teachers are assigned to help students improve the listening,
reading, writing and speaking abilities required to take the test.
The course content includes exam taking skills and strategies as
well as the key points and difficult issues in Chinese grammar,
vocabulary, reading and listening comprehension, etc. After
completing the course in an intensive manner, students will not only
master the content of HSK examination, but also the test-taking
skills.
Chinese Culture

Analyze the stratagem of the
history of Chinese culture through the study of a combination of
Chinese language and culture and learn how the ancient wisdom can be
applied to modern Chinese society. Learners may understand how
traditional Chinese values, history, culture affect the Chinese way
of communicating in the cultural-diverse and multinational world;
therefore, improve their communication ability in a deeper manner.
