Japanese
Universities looking at Education Export Market
“Next year for the first time there will be more higher
educational places available in Japan than there will be
students to fill them as the country’s declining population
starts to overtake the infrastructure built up over several
decades to supply workers to a rapidly developing economy that
placed high value on educational credentials….While financial
reforms and better services for students will be the key to
survival in the ear of excess supply of places, the emerging
interest in attracting more foreign students raises questions
about whether Japan can become a competitor in the international
education market…..There are now about 120,000 foreign students
at Japanese higher educational institutions, or 3 per cent of
the total student population. But the number of foreigners has
doubled in the past six years.”
